INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE MEETS AYURVEDA
Integrative Medicine at it’s Finest
At 5Elementos, we use a patient-centered approach to treat chronic illnesses and prevent disease. Our team of licensed health care providers work together to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for each patient’s unique condition. Each retreat experience is unique and fully customized to optimize health & healing.
With the growing popularity of Ayurveda in the West, many spas have added “Ayurvedic” treatments to their menu. Most of these treatments, however, are “Ayurvedic” in name only. Ayurveda is a time-honored, sophisticated system of healing. 5Elementos is one of only a handful of facilities that have specialized in Ayurveda, and are able to offer a fully integrated, authentic Ayurvedic program supervised by both Ayurvedic practitioners and Western Doctors to guarantee patients safety while undergoing panchakarma.
Our goal is to provide the best care possible by using an integrative approach and offering individualized therapeutic options. We welcome guests with all types of health conditions and symptoms. Our best conventional approaches are complemented by a broad range of services to improve your overall health and promote wellness.
What is Integrative Medicine?
Many of our first-time patients ask us what “integrative medicine” means and how it will help with the treatment of their symptoms or condition.
Integrative medicine is an approach that uses the best evidence-based practices to enhance conventional care. It is distinct from alternative medicine, which generally means choosing to use healing modalities in place of conventional care, or complementary medicine, which incorporates other modalities whether or not there is scientific evidence to support their use.
Integrative medicine encompasses a broad range of therapeutic approaches to achieve optimal health and wellness for those who are ill or those who are concerned about disease prevention. It is a powerful resource for those seeking to participate actively in their healthcare. At your appointment, you have the opportunity to ask questions and discover what therapies are safe and actually helpful, so that you can make rational choices about your own healthcare. Integrative medicine evaluates and incorporates specific services that address the whole person, not just the disease.
Chronic disease, often associated with challenging symptoms, may create stress and anxiety, which in turn contributes to the difficulty in managing many of those symptoms. Our patients benefit from our multi-disciplinary approach, with practitioners providing a variety of services to enhance your conventional medical treatment. Services available to our patients include: gastroenterology consultation, nutrition consultation, acupuncture, massage therapy, meditation, and visual imagery.
Mind-Body Therapy (Integrative Psychotherapy)
Integrative psychotherapy is an approach to healing and easing life’s problems by increasing one’s resilience and personal resources. It incorporates the fundamental principles of traditional psychotherapy and holistic medicine to promote healing on all levels: emotional physical, mental and spiritual. Integrative psychotherapy aims to create a healthy alliance between mind and body to enable patients to manage stress and create a healthy lifestyle. In addition to counseling services, some of the tools available at our Center include meditation and visual imagery.
We know that our minds can quickly jump to worst-case scenarios, worry and self-defeating behaviors. We can feel overwhelmed, lose direction, and lose our center. These patterns of thought contribute to illness, stuck relationships, and loss of self esteem. At 5Elementos we work with patients to develop and strengthen their mental and emotional health. We help increase the strengths that exist in each patient, discover new ways of managing current stressors, and create strategies to assist their movement onto a positive future.
People who enter into mind-body medicine are choosing a path of self-exploration that can yield many benefits. Therapy can help identify the causes of current concerns, help to identify factors that perpetuate problems, and also help patients become aware of fears or hurts that limit their psychological freedom. As patients come to understand what triggers their pain, anxiousness, or moodiness, the old patterns lose their hold. With the help of a therapist, patients can set goals and practice new, healthy behaviors, enabling changes to occur as they feel the courage and support to move beyond prior limitations of thought and attitude.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, a natural system of medicine, originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. The term Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda translates to knowledge of life. Based on the idea that disease is due to an imbalance or stress in a person’s consciousness, Ayurveda encourages certain lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment.
Ayurveda treatment starts with an internal purification process, followed by a special diet, herbal remedies, massage therapy, yoga, and meditation.
The concepts of universal interconnectedness, the body’s constitution (prakriti), and life forces (doshas) are the primary basis of ayurvedic medicine. Goals of treatment aid the person by eliminating impurities, reducing symptoms, increasing resistance to disease, reducing worry, and increasing harmony in life. Herbs and other plants, including oils and common spices, are used extensively in Ayurvedic treatment.
In India, Ayurveda is considered a form of medical care, equal to conventional Western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, naturopathic medicine, and homeopathic medicine. Practitioners of Ayurveda in India undergo state-recognized, institutionalized training.

Marma points are vital points located on the body where muscles, nerves, blood vessels, joint ligaments and bones meet. The proper stimulation of these points with light pranic healing touch with essential oil balances the flow of the entire body. This technique addresses stress, muscle pain, immune system support and to support the body in a state of balance and peace.
As we age, impurities caused by poor diet, weak digestion, stress, environmental toxins, and other factors can build up in our cells, joints, and tissues, inhibiting optimal functioning. At the heart of the programs at 5 Elementos are the traditional Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation treatments, known as Panchakarma; an integrated series of treatments and procedures that, taken together, dislodge impurities from the cells and tissues and flush them from the body. These detoxification therapies are generally taken in 3-day, 5-day and 7-day packages, although longer packages are available.
Inside the Panchakarma Experience
Because of genetic factors and more common lifestyle factors, we have weak areas of our body that accumulate toxins, when unaddressed these become disease. Ayurveda understands, if you want to experience optimal health, it is crucial to maintain healthy digestion and eliminate these build ups from the body.
Panchakarma therapy is known to clear the various microscopic and macroscopic structures of the body such as the respiratory system, lymphatic system, circulatory system, reproductive system, nervous system, among others that are affected by these insufficiently metabolized waste, processed foods, and emotions.
Panchakarma supports the reversal of the degenerative process quickly, and its effects are often profound and long-lasting.
Our Ayurvedic treatments work at a deep level to remove deeply embedded blockages, improve metabolism, and enliven the inner intelligence of the body, stimulating the body’s remarkable capacity for self-repair. Our programs are effective in maintaining general wellness and prevention, as well as in addressing specific disorders.
Each day you’ll spend soothing hours in a variety of treatments, including herbalized oil massage, cleansing steam baths and gentle purification procedures. During your initial consultation with our Ayurveda experts, your treatment plan will be individually designed to address your current state of health.
Our authentic Ayurvedic treatments work together synergistically to remove years of accumulated toxins while bringing balance to the body, potentially adding years to your life. Not only do our guests go home feeling renewed in body and spirit, but they also report that the benefits from their stay continue to grow long after they have returned home.
Experience Sacred Breath Self Healing
In this culture we often believe we should “do it on our own,” and if that fails, then “just give me the pill to fix it.” Seeking psychotherapy is a positive step towards a more sustained sense of well-being. We encourage patients to bring to therapy the intention of reaching your goals to live a happier, less stressful, and more fulfilling life. We will help patients do the work that will enable them to achieve their goals.
Our Sacred Breath Self Healing sessions are an important step towards self-exploration that can yield many benefits. We can help identify the causes of current concerns, help to identify factors that perpetuate problems, and also help patients become aware of fears or hurts that limit their psychological freedom.
As patients come to understand what triggers their pain, anxiousness, or moodiness, the old patterns lose their hold. Patients can set goals and practice new, healthy behaviors, enabling changes to occur as they feel the courage and support to move beyond prior limitations of thought and attitude.
Inside the Sacred Breath Self Healing Experience
Through simple yet profound tools & techniques you will unlock the subconscious mind bringing about deep and lasting healing. This is a journey into the deepest aspects of yourself. You’ll step far outside your comfort zone and into the magical zone where healing happens. Our program combines spiritual teachings with ancient yogic & Ayurvedic cleansing practices such as Sacred Breath Therapy as well as other behavior modification techniques providing you with profound techniques and teachings that you will be able to take with you and apply in your daily life.
The Science of Breath has been aware of the amazing benefits and wonders that the simplicity of breathing can accomplish. Spiritual masters of the East have practiced intricate breathing techniques for thousands of years. They have taken this inherent ability and intuitively enhanced its function, way beyond what we in the West call ‘breathing”. The process of Sacred Breathing combines the Eastern knowledge of ‘prana’ or life force breathing with the Western desire for faster transformation and psychological ‘rebirth’.

Nutrition & Food Philosophy
At 5Elementos, we believe it is possible to transform your health through deepening your awareness and understanding of food and nourishment. The 5Elementos approach to nutrition combines knowledge gained from current research with the wisdom of the yogic tradition, which views food as a source of prana, or life force. Our nutrition and food philosophy is grounded in four elements: quality, discernment, intention, and connection.
We encourage you to select the most nutritious, least processed, freshest foods—local, seasonal, and organic—whenever possible. These foods, as part of a flavorful plant-based diet, create more energy and vitality for you and your loved ones and align you with the rhythms of nature.
We support diverse dietary choices, and we believe that you have the ability to be the best source of wisdom for your body’s unique needs. The instincts that guide you toward healing and balance naturally arise when you approach eating through the practices of mindfulness and compassionate self-observation.
When we bring gratitude, joy, curiosity, and love to everything we cook and eat, we are reminded that food is powerful medicine and a source of life-giving energy. The act of eating becomes a celebration, and we are inspired to share this with others.
As we become aware of the ways our food choices and consumption affect our relationships with the environment, society, and the people closest to us, we strengthen our sense of interconnectedness with the planet and our fellow human beings.
Special Dietary Needs
Our mission in the Karma Kitchen is to offer delicious meals to our guests that help to create health and vitality within each individual and for our planet. We understand that the foods that create health and vitality will be slightly different for everyone, so we strive to offer many options to choose from.

Transportation From Guadalajara Airport to Lake Chapala
The Guadalajara International airport has many direct flights coming in from and departing to many different US cities including Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles and others. Flights to and from Canada must make a stop in either Mexico City or any other US hub depending on the airline you are flying with. Some of the most popular airlines that operate in Miguel Hidalgo International Airport are:
- American Airlines
- Alaska Airlines
- Continental Airlines
- US Airways
- American Eagle
The airport facilities are very clean and modern with all the amenities you come to expect from an international airport. The airport is about a 30-minute drive to Lake Chapala or Ajijic and transportation to the area is limited. Many people claim that taking a bus from the airport to Chapala can be done but it is not meant for newcomers. It is always suggested to take a Taxi on your first visit.
Taxis from Guadalajara Airport to Lake Chapala
Taxis are the best, fastest and most reliable option from the airport to Chapala. There are many Taxi’s all hours of the day and night at the airport, and there is a system on how to pay and take one. You have to buy a prepaid ticket at the “Taxi desk” which is located as soon as you exit the arrivals gate. This is to prevent the Taxi drivers from overcharging you.
The price you pay is a flat rate depending on where you are going. Prices for taking a cab to Chapala or Ajijic can be anywhere from $400 to $450 pesos ($35 – $45 USD) and the trip can take about 30 to 40 minutes depending on the traffic. The taxis are located right outside the building and are always available, there is hardly any waiting time or lines.
For those worried about safety in Mexican cabs don’t be. It is perfectly safe taking a taxi from the GDL airport, all the drivers carry their license and are authorized to transport people under strict control from the official Mexican tourism offices. Plus, each driver has to pass through a security checkpoint before leaving the airport, where they are checked for their certification and where they receive their voucher. Once you reach the hotel or home you are staying at, a 10% – 15% tip is recommended for the driver, perhaps $50 ($4 USD).
Buses from GDL airport to Chapala:
Catching a bus to save some money can be a hassle, don’t bother to do it and especially with baggage. Since the airport is a third of the way to Chapala. You would have to take a bus to the Guadalajara bus station, which is the opposite direction of Chapala. Or you could walk from the Airport terminal to the main road “Carretera 23” and wait under the bridge overpass for one of the buses coming from the GDL bus station, stop it and hop on board. But please keep in mind that it is about a quarter km walk from the airport to the main highway and walking conditions are not meant for pedestrians. The bus fare from the main highway can be anywhere from $30 to $50 pesos (3-4 USD). It’s a safe option, but only recommended for folks who are already familiar with the area so you know when and where to get off!
Can I pay in Dollars or are there ATM machines?
Yes, the Taxi tickets can be paid in USD dollars but the exchange rate the Taxi booths give you are not very good and always way above average. The best way to go upon this is to take some pesos out through the ATM machines at the airport. All international cards are accepted and the funds you take out are automatically converted into pesos depending on the exchange rate that day by the bank (usually better than what the Taxi exchange booths offer).
Renting a car at the airport?
Car rentals are also an option and can be rented at the arrivals section. As soon as you exit the terminal you will see AVIS, SIXT, BUDGET, EUROPCAR, HERTZ and other booths lined up in a row waiting to offer you a rental. Many of the booth operators will call out to you asking if you need to rent a car.
The procedure is similar to the taxi booths. You select the car you want, fill out the paperwork, pay with your credit card and then a shuttle van will come for you and take you over to the parking lots that house the vehicles. Pricing varies depending on the car you select, but prices can go anywhere from $400 – $700 pesos a day ($40 – $65 USD)
